Beth talks about her poem ‘Respect’

On 9th May at Bristol University, I did my ‘Respect’ song/poem/rap at the end of our drama performance.

I wrote ‘Respect” with my singing teacher, it’s all about my disability.

I wrote it because when I’m walking and wobble, people say I’m drunk, so I wanted to get the message out there about “I’m not drunk, don’t assume! respect me please.”

After I wrote the song, I thought “Wow, I wrote a song”.  I think my singing teacher said “It’s like a poem and a rap as well”.

So that’s what it became a song/rap/poem.

I liked performing my poem/rap/song, at the end of the performances.

We got feedback from the audience. Some comments were really nice like:

‘The poems were really emotional and entertaining’.

‘I have a better understanding of the challenges faced by people with learning disabilities and how annoying it is not to be heard’.

Someone came up to me to say they liked my poem and that comment was lovely 🙂 it made her feel emotional, and she also wanted a video of it.

If anyone else wants a video of Beth performing ‘Respect’, see the film below from our Misfits youtube page!
