This October 31st, Misfits Theatre will be celebrating 20 years of hosting Rhythm of the Night – our monthly accessible nightclub for adults with learning disabilities and their friends.
Rhythm of the Night originated in 2004 from a desire to create a safe, welcoming space for Misfits members and their friends and family, to socialise, dance and stay out late. We wanted to ensure that people with learning disabilities had the same ability to lead full and social life as everyone else and to make going out a normal thing to do.
Rhythm of The Night, which takes place at the Trinity Centre on the last Thursday of every month (except December), has a core team of 6 volunteers who have been the driving force behind the event since it started. The volunteers cover Front of House and DJing with support of the wider Misfits staff team. Visitors each month are greeted by our Front of House Volunteers Jane, Lillian and Adrian whilst David, Will and AJ spin all the favourite the latest hits and everyone’s favourite tunes taking requests from the room.
I love being a DJ for the Misfits. I enjoy playing good music. I sometimes get the crowd going by getting them to sing the songs to me. It’s a great atmosphere, everyone gets up dancing. When I don’t DJ I still like coming along to dance and have fun. Being a DJ has given me confidence in myself
Adam Maximen (AJ) – Rhythm of the Night DJ
Just like all public events Rhythm of the Night had to pause during Lockdown. Over the last 2 years it has been steadily re-building to pre-pandemic numbers and now attracts over 160 people each month travelling from as far and wide as Taunton and Bath. We recently created our own version of the ‘Bristol Rules’ – our very own ‘Rhythm of The Night Rules’ to help our members have a great night out.
To celebrate our 20th anniversary year, we will be hosting some extra special guests to bring a little magic and wonder to the night. There will be a photo booth, fancy décor and some fizz and sparkle.
We hope to see you there and don’t forget to dress to impress!

'It's always a pleasure to collaborate with The Misfits for the video articles that Disability & Society produces annually. Their creativity and talents really add value to each video and they're a splendid group of people to work with!'
